Sworn translation | Beëdigd Vertaalbureau

What is a sworn translation?

You are asked by a foreign authority to provide a sworn translation, also known as a sworn translation, of a certain document. Or you have a foreign document for which you need a sworn Dutch translation in order to register somewhere. You may ask yourself; "Whatis a sworn translation?" or"Isn'ta normal translation sufficient?". These are good questions. We are happy to explain.

A sworn translation is a translation performed by a sworn translator. This type of translation is a faithful translation of personal documents such as a birth certificate, diploma or marriage certificate. When you want to translate such official documents a "normal" translation is actually never sufficient. You will need to hire a sworn translator.

Do I need a sworn translation?

Whether you need a sworn translation depends on the rules in the country where you are going to use the document. Sworn translations are often needed at official moments, such as a move, a wedding or for a court of law. You should check with the foreign embassy or consulate in the Netherlands whether your translation needs to be sworn. Your notary or lawyer can often advise you on this.

What does a sworn translation cost?

At Beëdigd Vertaalbureau we calculate the cost of a sworn translation based on the language combination and the number of pages to be translated. If you enter these details in our quote module, you will immediately receive a customised quote. The quote already includes the costs for registered mail and VAT .

How do I find a translator for my sworn translation?

Finding an available translator for your sworn translation can be difficult in some situations. Especially when you need a sworn translation in a less common language, such as Korean, Somali or Greek. Therefore, it is always best to turn to a specialized translation agency. They have the necessary networks to engage the right professional sworn translator for you.

In case you need a sworn translation in a language that is spoken in several places in the world, always indicate in which country you are going to use your sworn translation. This is because it may be the case that in two countries where the same language is spoken, different terms are still used for certain words.

How soon can I receive a sworn translation?

The turnaround time for a sworn translation can vary widely. For some languages there are more translators available than for others. Moreover, in most cases you will first need to request a quote based on the language you need and the number of pages you want translated. At Beëdigd Vertaalbureau you can skip that step and immediately see the costs on the website.

How long it takes to receive the sworn translation after you have approved the quote depends on two things: the number of pages and the country to which the translation is to be sent.

At Beëdigd Vertaalbureau we always aim for delivery within 3 business days, taking 2 business days for the translation itself. We then deliver the translation for registered mail to PostNL. For shipments within the Netherlands, PostNL normally delivers the translation within 1 business day, with Tuesday through Saturday as delivery days for PostNL.

If the document contains more than 6 pages, we often need more than 2 business days for the translation. Of course, you can always ask about the possibilities for an urgent translation.

How do I show that my translation is a sworn translation?

A normal translation does not need to be sworn. However, when you need the translation for official bodies, such as the court, a sworn translation is often required. You can recognize a sworn translation by the statement, signature and stamp of a sworn translator. With this statement the translator certifies that your sworn translation has been truthfully translated.

All official bodies in the Netherlands accept sworn translations from translators who are sworn in the Netherlands. Is your document needed in another country? Then you can have the document legalised at the court by means of an apostille. This ensures that you can use the sworn translation in official proceedings, even abroad.

Can I also have my sworn translation legalised by you?

Legalising sworn translations makes them suitable for use abroad. Translations that will be used in the Netherlands do not need to be legalised. In such cases a sworn translation is sufficient.

Do you need the sworn translation outside the Netherlands? Then you can simply apply for an apostille yourself at a court in your area or legalize the document through the Consular Services Center (CDC). The apostille is a stamp (or sticker) from the court on a sworn translation, showing that the sworn translator's signature on the document is genuine. With that stamp, the document is valid abroad.

Always check in advance whether legalisation is required by the authority requesting a sworn translation.
